1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 That very evening, however, on going into the theatre, one of thechorus girls passed her all newly arrayed in a pretty mottledtweed suit, which took Carrie's eye. The young woman wore a finebunch of violets and seemed in high spirits. She smiled atCarrie good-naturedly as she passed, showing pretty, even teeth, and Carrie smiled back.
2. "Out where?" inquired Hurstwood.
3. Drouet smiled at his good-nature.
4. He was astonished at the woman's determination, but it onlyirritated him the more.
5. "Isn't it fine?" said Carrie.
6. Before following her in her round of seeking, let us look at thesphere in which her future was to lie. In 1889 Chicago had thepeculiar qualifications of growth which made such adventuresomepilgrimages even on the part of young girls plausible. Its manyand growing commercial opportunities gave it widespread fame, which made of it a giant magnet, drawing to itself, from allquarters, the hopeful and the hopeless--those who had theirfortune yet to make and those whose fortunes and affairs hadreached a disastrous climax elsewhere. It was a city of over500,000, with the ambition, the daring, the activity of ametropolis of a million. Its streets and houses were alreadyscattered over an area of seventy-five square miles. Itspopulation was not so much thriving upon established commerce asupon the industries which prepared for the arrival of others. Thesound of the hammer engaged upon the erection of new structureswas everywhere heard. Great industries were moving in. The hugerailroad corporations which had long before recognised theprospects of the place had seized upon vast tracts of land fortransfer and shipping purposes. Street-car lines had beenextended far out into the open country in anticipation of rapidgrowth. The city had laid miles and miles of streets and sewersthrough regions where, perhaps, one solitary house stood outalone--a pioneer of the populous ways to be. There were regionsopen to the sweeping winds and rain, which were yet lightedthroughout the night with long, blinking lines of gas-lamps,fluttering in the wind. Narrow board walks extended out, passinghere a house, and there a store, at far intervals, eventuallyending on the open prairie.

1. "Very. Really one of the best private theatricals I everattended. There was one actress who surprised us all."
2. "No use," he thought. "I might as well go on back home."
3. "Let me look."
4. Downstairs things were stirring again.
5. Suddenly she remembered Lola, who was out at the time.
6. "It's true," she said. "I couldn't if I wanted to, but whosefault is it? You're very free to sit and talk about who I couldassociate with. Why don't you get out and look for work?"

1. "Of course," she said, smiling; "did you think I wouldn't?"
2. "Well, George," she exclaimed, "why don't you get out and lookfor something? You could find something."
3. "You want to get some New York experience," concluded the affableMrs. Bermudez. "We'll take your name, though."
4. "Were there many there?"
5. Now the crier called the train ready and they got on. Hurstwoodbreathed a sigh of relief as it started. There was a short runto the river, and there they were ferried over. They had barelypulled the train off the ferry-boat when he settled back with asigh.
6. "Not yet," said Carrie.

1. He looked at her quite tenderly for his kind. There were someloose bills in his vest pocket--greenbacks. They were soft andnoiseless, and he got his fingers about them and crumpled them upin his hand.
2. Not trained to reason or introspect himself, he could not analysethe change that was taking place in his mind, and hence his body, but he felt the depression of it. Constant comparison betweenhis old state and his new showed a balance for the worse, whichproduced a constant state of gloom or, at least, depression. Now, it has been shown experimentally that a constantly subduedframe of mind produces certain poisons in the blood, calledkatastates, just as virtuous feelings of pleasure and delightproduce helpful chemicals called anastates. The poisonsgenerated by remorse inveigh against the system, and eventuallyproduce marked physical deterioration. To these Hurstwood wassubject.
3. "When?" she asked, with assumed indifference.
4、 "Yes," she said.
5、 "Oh, are you?" said Carrie, taking another glance at thenewcomer.

Now, because Carrie was pretty, the gentlemen who made up theadvance illustrations of shows about to appear for the Sundaypapers selected Carrie's photo along with others to illustratethe announcement. Because she was very pretty, they gave itexcellent space and drew scrolls about it. Carrie was delighted.Still, the management did not seem to have seen anything of it.At least, no more attention was paid to her than before. At thesame time there seemed very little in her part. It consisted ofstanding around in all sorts of scenes, a silent littleQuakeress. The author of the skit had fancied that a great dealcould be made of such a part, given to the right actress, butnow, since it had been doled out to Carrie, he would as leavehave had it cut out.

{ Her conscience, however, was not a Drouet, interested to praise. There she heard a different voice, with which she argued, pleaded, excused. It was no just and sapient counsellor, in itslast analysis. It was only an average little conscience, a thingwhich represented the world, her past environment, habit, convention, in a confused way. With it, the voice of the peoplewas truly the voice of God.
