1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Presuming that it is an appointment," continued the inspector,"it is of course a conceivable theory that this William Kirwan, thoughhe had the reputation of being an honest man, may have been inleague with the thief. He may have met him there, may even have helpedhim to break in the door, and then they may have fallen out betweenthemselves."
2. "Well, you can ask the King of Proosia, for all I care. I'vehad enough of it. Get out of this!" He rushed fiercely forward, and the inquirer flitted away into the darkness.
3. "This is very sudden, Colonel Emsworth," said he. "This willdisarrange all our plans."
4. "Yes, yes," cried the Duke, impatiently. "If you do your workwell, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, you will have no reason to complain ofniggardly treatment."
5. "He stood," said Holmes, "to the left of the door-that is to say, farther up the path than is necessary to reach the door?""Yes, he did."
6. "Yes, that is the Crown."

1. "I understand that they have had brokers in the house?""Yes, but they were paid off."
2. "'It was only a little thing, too. I had come into the parlourunexpected, and as I walked in at the door I saw a light of welcome onmy wife's face. But as she saw who it was it faded again, and sheturned away with a look of disappointment. That was enough for me.There was no one but Alec Fairbairn whose step she could have mistakenfor mine. If I could have seen him then I should have killed him,for I have always been like a madman when my temper gets loose. Marysaw the devil's light in my eyes, and she ran forward with her handson my sleeve. "Don't Jim, don't!" says she. "Where's Sarah?" Iasked. "In the kitchen," says she. "Sarah," says I as I went in, "thisman Fairbairn is never to darken my door again." "Why not?" saysshe. "Because I order it." "Oh!" says she, "if my friends are not goodenough for this house, then I am not good enough for it either.""You can do what you like," says I, "but if Fairbairn shows his facehere again I'll send you one of his ears for a keepsake." She wasfrightened by my face, I think, for she never answered a word, and thesame evening she left my house.
3. "Who posted your letter?"
4. "Well, certainly that is also a conceivable hypothesis," saidHolmes, smiling. "And now, Lord St. Simon, I think that I havenearly all my data. May I ask whether you were seated at thebreakfast-table so that you could see out of the window?""We could see the other side of the road and the Park.""Quite so. Then I do not think that I need to detain you longer. Ishall communicate with you."
5. We both sat in silence for some little time after listening tothis extraordinary narrative. Then Sherlock Holmes pulled down fromthe shelf one of the ponderous commonplace books in which he placedhis cuttings.
6. "Several."

1. My friend took the instrument and I heard the usual syncopateddialogue.
2. "Well, the snuff, then, and the Freemasonry?"
3. The man gave a violent start.
4. "No, it is more serious than that. To revenge crime is important, but to prevent it is more so. It is a terrible thing, Mr. Holmes, tosee a dreadful event, an atrocious situation, preparing itselfbefore your eyes, to clearly understand whither it will lead and yetto be utterly unable to avert it. Can a human being be placed in amore trying position?"
5. "Well, Watson, it is on the face of it a not impossible supposition. The man who had the guilt upon his soul of having brought such afate upon his own family might well be driven by remorse to inflict itupon himself. There are, however, some cogent reasons against it.Fortunately, there is one man in England who knows all about it, and Ihave made arrangements by which we shall hear the facts this afternoonfrom his own lips. Ah! he is a little before his time. Perhaps youwould kindly step this way, Dr. Leon Sterndale. We have beenconducting a chemical experiment indoors which has left our littleroom hardly fit for the reception of so distinguished a visitor."I had heard the click of the garden gate, and now the majesticfigure of the great African explorer appeared upon the path. He turnedin some surprise towards the rustic arbour in which we sat."You sent for me, Mr. Holmes. I had your note about an hour ago, andI have come, though I really do not know why I should obey yoursummons."
6. "And the alternative?"

1. "He investigated the case with great care, for Dr. Roylott's conducthad long been notorious in the county, but he was unable to find anysatisfactory cause of death. My evidence showed that the door had beenfastened upon the inner side, and the windows were blocked byold-fashioned shutters with broad iron bars, which were securedevery night. The walls were carefully sounded, and were shown to bequite solid all round, and the flooring was also thoroughlyexamined, with the same result. The chimney is wide, but is barredup by four large staples. It is certain, therefore, that my sister wasquite alone when she met her end. Besides, there were no marks ofany violence upon her."
2. "Criminals?" said Holmes. "Plural?"
3. "The credit of the execution is due to Monsieur Oscar Meunier, ofGrenoble, who spent some days in doing the moulding. It is a bust inwax. The rest I arranged myself during my visit to Baker Street thisafternoon."
4、 "'Quite so.'
5、 "So that three days have been wasted. The affair has been mostdeplorably handled."

"Have you any reason to suspect robbery?"

Holmes waved away the compliment, though his smile showed that ithad pleased him.

"Well, well, we score over you for once, Mr. Holmes. You must giveus best this time." He struck his stick sharply upon the ground, onwhich a cabman, his whip in his band, sauntered over from afour-wheeler which stood on the far side of the street. "May Iintroduce you to Mr. Sherlock Holmes?" he said to the cabman. Thisis Mr. Leverton, of Pinkerton's American Agency."

{ He picked it up and gazed at it in the peculiar introspectivefashion which was characteristic of him. "It is perhaps lesssuggestive than it might have been," he remarked, "and yet thereare a few inferences which are very distinct, and a few otherswhich represent at least a strong balance of probability. Thatthe man was highly intellectual is of course obvious upon the faceof it, and also that he was fairly well-to-do within the lastthree years, although he has now fallen upon evil days. He hadforesight, but has less now than formerly, pointing to a moralretrogression, which, when taken with the decline of his fortunes, seems to indicate some evil influence, probably drink, at workupon him. This may account also for the obvious fact that hiswife has ceased to love him."

      "My friend ascended with the doctor to the chamber of death, while Iremained in the study, turning the whole matter over and over in myhead, and feeling as sombre as ever I had done in my life. What wasthe past of this Trevor, pugilist, traveller, and gold-digger, and howhad he placed himself in the power of this acid-faced seaman? Why,too, should he faint at an allusion to the half-effaced initialsupon his arm and die of fright when he had a letter from Fordingham?Then I remembered that Fordingham was in Hampshire, and that thisMr. Beddoes, whom the seaman had gone to visit and presumably toblackmail, had also been mentioned as living in Hampshire. The letter,then, might either come from Hudson, the seaman, saying that he hadbetrayed the guilty secret which appeared to exist, or it might comefrom Beddoes, warning an old confederate that such a betrayal wasimminent. So far it seemed clear enough. But then how could thisletter be trivial and grotesque, as described by the son? He must havemisread it. If so, it must have been one of those ingenious secretcodes which mean one thing while they seem to mean another. I must seethis letter. If there was a hidden meaning in it, I was confident thatI could pluck it forth. For an hour I sat pondering over it in thegloom, until at last a weeping maid brought in a lamp, and close ather heels came my friend Trevor, pale but composed, with these verypapers which lie upon my knee held in his grasp. He sat downopposite to me, drew the lamp to the edge of the table, and handedme a short note scribbled, as you see, upon a single sheet of graypaper. 'The supply of game for London is going steadily up,' it ran.'Head-keeper Hudson, we believe, has been now told to receive allorders for fly-paper and for preservation of your hen-pheasant'slife.'}

"That is so, Mr. Holmes, though the matter is past and done with. Wewere a family of tin-miners at Redruth, but we sold out our venture toa company, and so retired with enough to keep us. I won't deny thatthere was some feeling about the division of the money and it stoodbetween us for a time, but it was all forgiven and forgotten, and wewere the best of friends together."

"It was black enough before against this young man, but ourinquiries make it blacker," he remarked as the cab lumbered off."His coming marriage gives a motive for the crime. He naturally wantedmoney. The idea was in his head, since he spoke about it. He nearlymade the girl an accomplice in the treason by telling her his plans. It is all very bad."
