1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Hurstwood was sorry when a character, known as Peach Blossom, interrupted her. He stirred irritably, for he wished her to goon. He was charmed by the pale face, the lissome figure, drapedin pearl grey, with a coiled string of pearls at the throat.Carrie had the air of one who was weary and in need ofprotection, and, under the fascinating make-believe of themoment, he rose in feeling until he was ready in spirit to go toher and ease her out of her misery by adding to his own delight.
2. "He does?"
3. Carrie came away wearily, somewhat more abashed for her pains.
4. "'Tis a foine couple," he observed to himself. "They must berich."
5. Again he resorted to the Bowery lodging-house, brooding overwhere to look. From this it was but a step to beggary.
6. Carrie thrilled to be taken so seriously. For the moment, loneliness deserted her. Here was praise which was keen andanalytical.

1. Carrie's new state was remarkable in that she saw possibilitiesin it. She was no sensualist, longing to drowse sleepily in thelap of luxury. She turned about, troubled by her daring, glad ofher release, wondering whether she would get something to do,wondering what Drouet would do. That worthy had his future fixedfor him beyond a peradventure. He could not help what he wasgoing to do. He could not see clearly enough to wish to dodifferently. He was drawn by his innate desire to act the oldpursuing part. He would need to delight himself with Carrie assurely as he would need to eat his heavy breakfast. He mightsuffer the least rudimentary twinge of conscience in whatever hedid, and in just so far he was evil and sinning. But whatevertwinges of conscience he might have would be rudimentary, you maybe sure.
2. Drouet was on the corner waiting, in good spirits.
3. She was extremely happy now that she understood. She loved himthe more for thinking that he would rescue her so. As for him,the marriage clause did not dwell in his mind. He was thinkingthat with such affection there could be no bar to his eventualhappiness.
4. Drouet hung on, thinking he was all in all. The dinner wasspoiled by his enthusiasm. Hurstwood went home feeling as if heshould die if he did not find affectionate relief. He whispered"to-morrow" passionately to Carrie, and she understood. Hewalked away from the drummer and his prize at parting feeling asif he could slay him and not regret. Carrie also felt the miseryof it.
5. "Not a bit. All you need is a little more ginger. Do it as youshowed me. Get that toss of your head you had the other night."
6. Carrie made no answer.

1. "Well, you know what I am here for, don't you?" said the manconfidentially.
2. "I can guess," said Hurstwood softly.
3. "And you want me to get some woman to take a part?" questionedDrouet, anxious to terminate the subject and get on to somethingelse. "What are you going to play?"
4. "Oh, let up," he answered.
5. "Hello, Charley," said Hurstwood, looking out from his officedoor.
6. "No, I don't, to tell the truth." He thought a moment. "Yes, Ido, too. Laura, that's the thing--you're to be Laura."

1. "I notice the papers praise it," said Ames.
2. Hurstwood had gone, at Drouet's invitation, to meet a new baggageof fine clothes and pretty features. He entered, expecting toindulge in an evening of lightsome frolic, and then lose track ofthe newcomer forever. Instead he found a woman whose youth andbeauty attracted him. In the mild light of Carrie's eye wasnothing of the calculation of the mistress. In the diffidentmanner was nothing of the art of the courtesan. He saw at oncethat a mistake had been made, that some difficult conditions hadpushed this troubled creature into his presence, and his interestwas enlisted. Here sympathy sprang to the rescue, but it was notunmixed with selfishness. He wanted to win Carrie because hethought her fate mingled with his was better than if it wereunited with Drouet's. He envied the drummer his conquest as hehad never envied any man in all the course of his experience.
3. Naturally, being about the house, he noticed the way Carrie didthings. She was far from perfect in household methods andeconomy, and her little deviations on this score first caught hiseye. Not, however, before her regular demand for her allowancebecame a grievous thing. Sitting around as he did, the weeksseemed to pass very quickly. Every Tuesday Carrie asked for hermoney.
4、 This was a common trick of other residents of the building, whenever they had forgotten their outside keys. They did notapologise for it, however.
5、 "Can you give me something to do?" said Carrie.

He shut off the currentand did an energetic turn at the brake, but not in time to avoidan unnaturally quick turn.
