1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 When they were alone, the two sisters began a somewhat freerconversation, Carrie interrupting it to hum a little, as theyworked at the dishes.
2. As she was going through the room to begin preparing dinner,Carrie said:
3. When she arrived at the house at the end of the day, weary anddisheartened, she discovered that Drouet had been there. Hisumbrella and light overcoat were gone. She thought she missedother things, but could not be sure. Everything had not beentaken.
4. "'Under the Gaslight.'"
5. "Is that a paper?" said Carrie.
6. "They can't," said Carrie.

1. "I was," said Drouet.
2. Drouet smiled at his good-nature.
3. "They've got the militia on their side," he thought. "Thereisn't anything those men can do."
4. Carrie only smiled consciously.
5. "Ray," she said, "the greatest happiness I have ever felt hasbeen the thought that all your affection was forever bestowedupon a virtuous woman, your equal in family, fortune, andaccomplishments. What a revelation do you make to me now! Whatis it makes you continually war with your happiness?"
6. "Of course we are," he said, with the slightest modification ofsharpness.

1. The cabby began to turn the horse around."Michigan Central depot," he said, standing up and speaking solow that Carrie could not hear, "as fast as you can go."
2. "See here," he said, "there's no use my talking about this atall. I respect your power all right, but I'll have to deal withthe people who know."
3. "Doesn't look much like a man who sees spirits, does he?" saidDrouet.
4. Drouet, for one, was lured as much by his longing for pleasure asby his desire to shine among his betters. The many friends he methere dropped in because they craved, without, perhaps, consciously analysing it, the company, the glow, the atmospherewhich they found. One might take it, after all, as an augur ofthe better social order, for the things which they satisfiedhere, though sensory, were not evil. No evil could come out ofthe contemplation of an expensively decorated chamber. The worsteffect of such a thing would be, perhaps, to stir up in thematerial-minded an ambition to arrange their lives upon asimilarly splendid basis. In the last analysis, that wouldscarcely be called the fault of the decorations, but rather ofthe innate trend of the mind. That such a scene might stir theless expensively dressed to emulate the more expensively dressedcould scarcely be laid at the door of anything save the falseambition of the minds of those so affected. Remove the elementso thoroughly and solely complained of--liquor--and there wouldnot be one to gainsay the qualities of beauty and enthusiasmwhich would remain. The pleased eye with which our modernrestaurants of fashion are looked upon is proof of thisassertion.
5. Now the stones were off, and Hurstwood took his place again amida continued chorus of epithets. Both officers got up beside himand the conductor rang the bell, when, bang! bang! through windowand door came rocks and stones. One narrowly grazed Hurstwood'shead. Another shattered the window behind.
6. "If I were you," he said, "I'd change."

1. "Oh, dear me!" exclaimed Carrie. Then she settled back with asigh. "There's no use crying over spilt milk," she said. "It'stoo late."
2. "I pass," he said.
3. "They say you can get things lots cheaper there."
4、 "Well," said Hanson, after a while, sticking his hands out beforehim, "what can you do?"
5、 "No, I don't," she answered. "What do you mean?"

The sight of him always around in his untidy clothes and gloomyappearance drove Carrie to seek relief in other places. Twice aweek there were matinees, and then Hurstwood ate a cold snack, which he prepared himself. Two other days there were rehearsalsbeginning at ten in the morning and lasting usually until one. Now, to this Carrie added a few visits to one or two chorusgirls, including the blue-eyed soldier of the golden helmet. Shedid it because it was pleasant and a relief from dulness of thehome over which her husband brooded.

"Yes, she is," she returned, cheerfully, a little suggestion ofpossible defect in herself awakening in her mind. If that was sofine, she must look at it more closely. Instinctively, she felta desire to imitate it. Surely she could do that too.

Now he left before she did, which was a remarkable thing, andtramped eastward to Fourteenth Street and Sixth Avenue, where hetook the car. He had read that scores of applicants wereapplying at the office of the Brooklyn City Railroad building andwere being received. He made his way there by horse-car andferry--a dark, silent man--to the offices in question. It was along way, for no cars were running, and the day was cold; but hetrudged along grimly. Once in Brooklyn, he could clearly see andfeel that a strike was on. People showed it in their manner.Along the routes of certain tracks not a car was running. Aboutcertain corners and nearby saloons small groups of men werelounging. Several spring wagons passed him, equipped with plainwooden chairs, and labelled "Flatbush" or "Prospect Park. Fare,Ten Cents." He noticed cold and even gloomy faces. Labour washaving its little war.

{ On such occasions, his money went also. He knew of several pokerrooms down town. A few acquaintances he had in downtown resortsand about the City Hall. It was a change to see them andexchange a few friendly commonplaces.

At a quarter after one in the morning he came out of the place. The chill, bare streets seemed a mockery of his state. He walkedslowly west, little thinking of his row with Carrie. He ascendedthe stairs and went into his room as if there had been notrouble. It was his loss that occupied his mind. Sitting downon the bedside he counted his money. There was now but a hundredand ninety dollars and some change. He put it up and began toundress.
