1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 The year '87 furnished us with a long series of cases ofgreater or less interest, of which I retain the records. Among myheadings under this one twelve months I find an account of theadventure of the Paradol Chamber, of the Amateur MendicantSociety, who held a luxurious club in the lower vault of afurniture warehouse, of the facts connected with the loss of theBritish bark Sophy Anderson, of the singular adventures of theGrice Patersons in the island of Uffa, and finally of theCamberwell poisoning case. In the latter, as may be remembered,Sherlock Holmes was able, by winding up the dead man's watch, toprove that it had been wound up two hours before, and thattherefore the deceased had gone to bed within that time--adeduction which was of the greatest importance in clearing up thecase. All these I may sketch out at some future date, but none ofthem present such singular features as the strange train ofcircumstances which I have now taken up my pen to describe. It was in the latter days of September, and the equinoctialgales had set in with exceptional violence. All day the wind hadscreamed and the rain had beaten against the windows, so that evenhere in the heart of great, hand-made London we were forced toraise our minds for the instant from the routine of life, and torecognize the presence of those great elemental forces whichshriek at mankind through the bars of his civilization, likeuntamed beasts in a cage. As evening drew in, the storm grewhigher and louder, and the wind cried and sobbed like a child inthe chimney. Sherlock Holmes sat moodily at one side of thefireplace cross-indexing his records of crime, while I at theother was deep in one of Clark Russell's fine sea-stories untilthe howl of the gale from without seemed to blend with the text, and the splash of the rain to lengthen out into the long swash ofthe sea waves. My wife was on a visit to her mother's, and for afew days I was a dweller once more in my old quarters at BakerStreet.
2. "Plumb in the middle of the back of the head and smack through thebrain. He was the best shot in India, and I expect that there arefew better in London. Have you heard the name?"
3. "With this train of reasoning in my head I naturally looked about inMortimer Tregennis's room to find some remains of this substance. The obvious place to look was the talc shield or smoke-guard of thelamp. There, sure enough, I perceived a number of flaky ashes, andround the edges a fringe of brownish powder, which had not yet beenconsumed. Half of this I took, as you saw, and I placed it in anenvelope."
4. I produced it from my hip-pocket, a short, handy, but veryserviceable little weapon. He undid the catch, shook out thecartridges, and examined it with care.
5. "You will excuse my troubling you, I am sure," said she, as mycompanion rose to greet her, "but I have had a very strangeexperience, and as I have no parents or relations of any sort fromwhom I could ask advice, I thought that perhaps you would be kindenough to tell me what I should do."
6. "Your features and especially your eyes. Perhaps you cannot yourselfrecall how your reverie commenced?"

1. "Surely," answered Holmes, "it is not hard to say that a man withthat bearing, expression of authority, and sun-baked skin, is asoldier, is more than a private, and is not long from India.""That he has not left the service long is shown by his still wearinghis ammunition boots, as they are called," observed Mycroft."He had not the cavalry stride, yet he wore his hat on one side,as is shown by the lighter skin on that side of his brow. His weightis against his being a sapper. He is in the artillery.""Then, of course, his complete mourning shows that he has lostsomeone very dear. The fact that he is doing his own shopping looks asthough it were his wife. He has been buying things for children, youperceive. There is a rattle, which shows that one of them is veryyoung. The wife probably died in childbed. The fact that he has apicture-book under his arm shows that there is another child to bethought of."
2. Billy glanced with some solicitude at the closed door of thebedroom.
3. We were seated at breakfast one morning, my wife and I, when themaid brought in a telegram. It was from Sherlock Holmes and ran inthis way:
4. "I fear that there is pain for you, Mr. Ferguson, whatever thesolution may be," said he. "I would spare you all I can. I cannotsay more for the instant, but before I leave this house I hope I mayhave something definite."
5. "Well, there's no need for me to dwell on that part of it. Youknow now what James Barclay was capable of. Bhurtee was relieved byNeill next day, but the rebels took me away with them in theirretreat, and it was many a long year before ever I saw a white faceagain. I was tortured and tried to get away, and was captured andtortured again. You can see for yourselves the state in which I wasleft. Some of them that fled into Nepal took me with them, and thenafterwards I was up past Darjeeling. The hill-folk up there murderedthe rebels who had me, and I became their slave for a time until Iescaped; but instead of going south I had to go north, until I foundmyself among the Afghans. There I wandered about for many a year, and at last came back to the Punjab, where I lived mostly among thenatives and picked up a living by the conjuring tricks that I hadlearned. What use was it for me, a wretched cripple, to go back toEngland or to make myself known to my old comrades? Even my wish forrevenge would not make me do that. I had rather that Nancy and myold pals should think of Harry Wood as having died with a straightback, than see him living and crawling with a stick like a chimpanzee. They never doubted that I was dead, and I meant that they nevershould. I heard that Barclay had married Nancy, and that he was risingrapidly in the regiment, but even that did not make me speak."But when one gets old one has a longing for home. For years I'vebeen dreaming of the bright green fields and the hedges of England. Atlast I determined to see them before I died. I saved enough to bringme across, and then I came here where the soldiers are, for I knowtheir ways and how to amuse them and so earn enough to keep me.""Your narrative is most interesting," said Sherlock Holmes. "Ihave already heard of your meeting with Mrs. Barclay, and yourmutual recognition. You then, as I understand, followed her home andsaw through the window an altercation between her husband and her,in which she doubtless cast his conduct to you in his teeth. Yourown feelings overcame you, and you ran across the lawn and broke inupon them."
6. "And brought Miss Hunter down from London in order to get rid of thedisagreeable persistence of Mr. Fowler."

1. "Lord Robert St. Simon," announced our page-boy, throwing open thedoor. A gentleman entered, with a pleasant, cultured face,high-nosed and pale, with something perhaps of petulance about themouth, and with the steady, well-opened eye of a man whose pleasantlot it had ever been to command and to be obeyed. His manner wasbrisk, and yet his general appearance gave an undue impression of age,for he had a slight forward stoop and a little bend of the knees as hewalked. His hair, too, as he swept off his very curly-brimmed hatwas grizzled round the edges and thin upon the top. As to his dress,it was careful to the verge of foppishness, with high collar, blackfrock-coat, white waistcoat, yellow gloves, patent leather shoes, and light-coloured gaiters. He advanced slowly into the room, turning his head from left to right, and swinging in his right handthe cord which held his golden eyeglasses.
2. "'It was the year '55, when the Crimean War was at its height, andthe old convict ships had been largely used as transports in the BlackSea. The government was compelled, therefore, to use smaller andless suitable vessels for sending out their prisoners. The GloriaScott had been in the Chinese tea-trade, but she was an old-fashioned,heavy-bowed, broad-beamed craft, and the new clippers had cut her out.She was a five-hundred-ton boat; and besides her thirty-eightjail-birds, she carried twenty-six of a crew, eighteen soldiers, acaptain, three mates, a doctor, a chaplain, and four warders. Nearly ahundred souls were in her, all told, when we set sail from Falmouth."'The partitions between the cells of the convicts instead ofbeing of thick oak, as is usual in convict-ships, were quite thinand frail. The man next to me, upon the aft side, was one whom I hadparticularly noticed when we were led down the quay. He was a youngman with a clear, hairless face, a long, thin nose, and rathernut-cracker jaws. He carried his head very jauntily in the air, hada swaggering style of walking, and was, above all else, remarkable forhis extraordinary height. I don't think any of our heads would havecome up to his shoulder, and I am sure that he could not have measuredless than six and a half feet. It was strange among so many sad andweary faces to see one which was full of energy and resolution. Thesight of it was to me like a fire in a snowstorm. I was glad, then, tofind that he was my neighbour, and gladder still when, in the deadof the night, I heard a whisper close to my ear and found that hehad managed to cut an opening in the board which separated us."'"Hullo, chummy!" said he, "what's your name, and what are youhere for?"
3. "The warrant is on its way. This coffin shall remain in the houseuntil it comes."
4. "Very good, Watson. What did he say?"
5. "Have you her photograph?"
6. "Can I be of assistance?"

1. "But what were his relations with the governess, and how did youdiscover them?"
2. The brother scribbled a note upon a leaf of his pocket-book, and, ringing the bell, he handed it to the waiter.
3. "Excellent. You had best go with him, Watson. He may need help oradvice. Clearly we have come to a crisis in this affair."But our client seemed by no means eager to start.
4、 "There are many problems of disease, many strange pathologicalpossibilities, in the East, Watson." He paused after each sentenceto collect his failing strength. "I have learned so much during somerecent researches which have a medico-criminal aspect. It was in thecourse of them that I contracted this complaint. You can do nothing.""Possibly not. But I happen to know that Dr. Ainstree, thegreatest living authority upon tropical disease, is now in London. Allremonstrance is useless, Holmes, I am going this instant to fetchhim." I turned resolutely to the door.
5、 Lord St. Simon glanced over it. "Yes, it is correct, as far as itgoes."

"No, indeed," said Holmes, heartily, springing to his feet. "Well,Soames, I think we have cleared your little problem up, and ourbreakfasts awaits us at home. Come, Watson! "I daresay my face looked as bewildered as yours did just now whenfirst I read this message. Then I reread it very carefully. It wasevidently as I had thought, and some secret meaning must lie buried inthis strange combination of words. Or could it be that there was aprearranged significance to such phrases as 'flypaper' and'hen-pheasant'? Such a meaning would be arbitrary and could not bededuced in any way. And yet I was loath to believe that this was thecase, and the presence of the word Hudson seemed to show that thesubject of the message was as I had guessed, and that it was fromBeddoes rather than the sailor. I tried it backward, but thecombination 'life pheasant's hen' was not encouraging. Then I triedalternate words, but neither 'the of for' nor 'supply game London'promised to throw any light upon it.
